The Cairns Gastroenterology doctors are regional leaders in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and colonoscopy, especially in the era of bowel cancer screening and prevention. They provide cutting edge technology for investigation of small bowel disorders with our latest Wireless Capsule Endoscopy service at our Cairns Gastroenterology practice. They are now also offering Insured Category 1 Bowel Cancer screening colonoscopy patients a NO GAP FEE experience (including the Gastroenterologist, the Anaesthetists [East Coast Anaesthetic Practice (ECAP) only] and any Histo-pathology tests required)

The doctors perform private endoscopy at Cairns Private Hospital, Ramsay Surgical Centre Cairns (RSCC), Innisfail Hospital and Far North Day Hospital. Consultations are available for general gastroenterology and hepatobiliary diseases (liver, pancreas, bile duct) at our Cairns Gastroenterology practice. They offer inpatient consultation service at Cairns Private Hospital and Cairns Clinic.

THE DOCTORS

DR BERNARD CHIN (pictured right) is the founder and principal of Cairns Gastroenterology since 2007. He graduated from the University of Adelaide and completed his Gastroenterology training in Sydney. He has an interest in General Gastroenterology and bowel cancer screening. Dr Chin practiced part-time at the Cairns Base Hospital between 2007 and 2017.

DR JOHN OMBIGA (pictured left) completed his Gastroenterology training in Sydney followed by two years as a fellow in Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Perth. He has been a staff specialist Gastroenterologist at Cairns Hospital (Queensland Health) since 2007. Cairns Gastroenterology has been providing administrative services to Dr Ombiga since 2013 when he entered private practice. He is a general Gastroenterologist and liver specialist with interests in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, IBS, Hepatitis, cancer screening and endoscopic resection of large polyps.

DR MONTRI GURURATSAKUL has a PhD from Adelaide in GI motility and completed his Gastroenterology training in Cairns and Brisbane. He went on to further his Interventional GI training in Sydney and Vancouver. He specialises in ERCP and EUS (liver, bile duct and pancreatic diseases).

DR ANDREW PALMER studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, graduating with Commendation. Andrew is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, with advanced training undertaken in Brisbane at the Mater Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital. He currently has a part-time appointment in Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Addiction Medicine as a Staff Specialist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. Andrew is interested in the role of gut microbiome in gastrointestinal disease and is undertaking a PhD through the University of Queensland in this area. He is committed to quality endoscopy and has previously published work in the fields of gastric, oesophageal and colorectal cancer, and on the endoscopic management of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Dr Palmer will be working in Cairns on a permanent part time basis several days a month.
