Gastroenterology Consultation

Your initial consultation at Cairns Gastroenterology will allow our Gastroenterologist to evaluate your symptoms. As part of that consultation, our Gastroenterologist may request tests or procedures such as blood tests, imaging studies, or endoscopic examinations for diagnosis or treatment of your symptoms.

Colonoscopy (Lower Endoscopy)

This is an examination that allows our Gastroenterologist to look at the inner lining of your large intestine (rectum and colon). The doctor uses a thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope, containing a camera and a light, to look at the colon. A colonoscopy helps find ulcers, polyps, tumors, and any areas of inflammation or bleeding.

Gastroscopy (Upper Endoscopy)

This an examination of the upper digestive tract (the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum) using an endoscope which is a long, thin, flexible tube containing a camera and a light, passed through the mouth to view the lining of these organs.

Oesophageal Manometry and pH studies

We have access to the latest equipment at the Cairns Hospital oesophageal lab to diagnose patients with difficult upper GI symptoms not responding to conventional management. We are then able to interpret these complex results and formulate the most appropriate treatment plan.

Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (PillCam)

An effective procedure to visualize the small bowel, this involves the patient swallowing a capsule, which travel naturally through the digestive tract and is then excreted. As the capsule passes through the digestive tract, images are captured and sent to the recording device. During the procedure, the patient carries the recording device whilst going about their normal daily life. After returning the device to our Cairns Gastroenterology practice, our Gastroenterologist will review and report on the images.

Rapid Access Endoscopy

This is to reduce patient waiting time and improve efficiency on suitable patients at Cairns Gastroenterology. Many patients have an absolute or urgent requirement for endoscopy, and some patients are unable to attend both a consultation and their endoscopy on separate days. Consultation will be provided before and after the procedure, usually by convenient Telehealth.

ACNES/Abdominal Pain Program (APP)

Once a patient has suffered from chronic abdominal pain for 3 months or more and every appropriate test performed has been unremarkable, there is a significant chance that the symptoms are due to Abdominal Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment Syndrome (ACNES). Our practise has developed a special program to effectively deal with this problem since 2016 with an excellent success rate. READ MORE
